Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement, which examines functional human movements through the use of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. The Kinesio Taping technique and Kinesio Tex tape, a type of kinesiology tape, were developed in 1973 by Japanese chiropractor and acupuncturist Dr. Kenzo Kase. The philosophy behind the development of the method is that better results can be achieved through a taping method that is similar to the structural properties and flexibility of human skin, rather than limiting joint movements like standard tape applications.
Kinesiology is a discipline that aims to achieve maximum performance with minimal energy expenditure in disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system, by first studying normal human structure and movements within the framework of mechanical laws and then comparing them with pathological conditions.
In kinesiotape or taping therapy, the tapes remain on the applied area for 24 hours and can last between 3 to 7 days. Depending on the reason for the tape application and the patient's healing process, repeated sessions can be performed.
The effects of kinesiotape banding therapy on muscle functions can be listed as pain reduction, increased joint range of motion, regulation of muscle length, and reduction of muscle fatigue.
Although kinesiological taping does not have serious side effects, skin reactions can be seen in the applied area due to the use of the tape. These are generally in the form of allergic reactions or regional irritation. Allergic reactions usually occur against the polyacrylate adhesive that provides the tape's adhesive property, and if such a situation occurs, the tape should be removed. In addition, if there is an open wound, skin abrasion or redness, or if the skin is sensitive and healing, the application in that area is postponed until the skin health is restored.
